The 4th International Symposium and Seminar on Global Nuclear Human Resource Development for Safety, Security and Safeguards was held
From Feb. 17, 2015 (Tue) to Feb. 26, 2015 (Thu), “The 4th International Symposium and Seminar on Global Nuclear Human Resource Development for Safety, Security and Safeguards -Nuclear Safety in the Post-Fukushima Era-” was held. This symposium based on the topic of 3S (Safety, Security, and Safeguards) is held annually for the purpose of developing global human resources that can appropriately understand nuclear disasters, and understand the steps necessary to prevent future accidents from occurring. This year, The S “Safety”, of 3S was focused on, and many presentations, Q&A discussions, group discussions, and more were held.
This year, students, young professionals, and presenters were able to visit Fukushima Daiichi and Daini Nuclear Power Stations, and see the current status of reactor buildings 1-4. Later, they had the chance to discuss with the current TEPCO employees to discuss the decommissioning process. As students had the chance to interact with the current Daiichi engineers, they felt strong sense of realness to the current situation.
The next day, the students visited 21st Century Forest Park (Fukushima Prefecture), and measured the levels of radioactive contamination in the area. They compared their measurements to values measured in Tokyo prior to the Fukushima trip, and were able to understand the current situation in regards to radiation contamination in Fukushima Prefecture.
In the second half of the symposium and seminar, students split into 6 groups by nations and regions, and discussed and debated the national factors that can affect safety culture, then gave a group presentation on their conclusions. After wards, the groups were reformed, and over 2 and a half days discussed a group topic and discussed how and why their topics affected nuclear safety, then gave a presentation with a Q&A session. These sessions gave the students a very deep and profound understanding of their topics.
At the symposium, there were invited speakers from both Japan and abroad, who were the leaders of the field nuclear energy, as well as both domestic and foreign students, as well as the general public, with a total of over 130 participants, making for a very successful symposium and seminar.
